Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Indigenous language broadcasting has become a cornerstone of political communication in multilingual societies like Nigeria. By using local languages to convey political messages, broadcasters bridge the communication gap between policymakers and grassroots communities, fostering inclusivity and engagement. Dutse Local Government Area in Jigawa State, with its rich cultural and linguistic diversity, offers a compelling context to examine the role of indigenous language broadcasting in political mobilization. Previous studies suggest that political messages delivered in local languages resonate more deeply with audiences, enhancing comprehension and emotional connection (Ahmed & Bello, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). Indigenous language broadcasting also plays a critical role in educating voters, addressing political apathy, and encouraging active participation in governance. However, challenges such as biased reporting, limited access to broadcasting infrastructure, and socio-cultural barriers may impact its effectiveness. This study explores how indigenous language broadcasting influences political mobilization in Dutse LGA, shedding light on its strengths and limitations in fostering democratic engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of indigenous language broadcasting to enhance political mobilization, voter turnout and political engagement remain low in many rural areas, including Dutse LGA. Factors such as limited access to credible information, linguistic barriers, and socio-political dynamics hinder the effective dissemination of political messages. Furthermore, there is a paucity of empirical research on the role of indigenous language broadcasting in shaping political attitudes and behaviors in this context. This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating the impact of indigenous language broadcasting on political mobilization in Dutse LGA, providing insights into its effectiveness and challenges.

1. To assess the reach and accessibility of indigenous language broadcasting in Dutse LGA.
2. To evaluate the influence of indigenous language broadcasting on political awareness and participation.
3. To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of indigenous language broadcasting in political mobilization.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How accessible is indigenous language broadcasting to residents of Dutse LGA?
2. What is the impact of indigenous language broadcasting on political awareness and participation in Dutse LGA?
3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of indigenous language broadcasting in Dutse LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Indigenous language broadcasting significantly enhances political awareness in Dutse LGA.
2. Indigenous language broadcasting significantly increases political participation in Dutse LGA.
3. Challenges such as infrastructure and socio-political biases negatively impact the effectiveness of indigenous language broadcasting.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the role of indigenous language broadcasting as a tool for political mobilization in Dutse LGA. By exploring its impact, the research contributes to the broader understanding of how localized communication strategies can foster democratic participation. The findings will benefit policymakers, media practitioners, and civil society organizations by identifying best practices and addressing barriers to effective communication. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of cultural and linguistic inclusivity in political communication, paving the way for more equitable and participatory governance.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses exclusively on the impact of indigenous language broadcasting on political mobilization within Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State. It does not extend to other regions or forms of media.
